Question 1

Do I need a reservation to drive Mount Blue Sky Scenic Byway?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Every vehicle and motorcycle needs a timed ticket purchased in advance on Recreation.gov, and there is no early-morning exemption. The old "arrive before 8 a.m." rule no longer applies. Tickets are not sold at the Welcome Station, and there is no cell service there, so download or print yours before leaving Idaho Springs or Bergen Park. Hikers and cyclists enter free.

Question 2

Does the America the Beautiful pass work at Mount Blue Sky?

Accepted Answer

No. Under the recreation area's locally managed operating structure, federal recreation passes, including America the Beautiful, the Access Pass, and Federal Lands Access Passes, are no longer accepted at Mount Blue Sky. The Access Pass still covers entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park.

Question 3

Can you visit a Colorado 14er without hiking?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Mount Blue Sky Scenic Byway is paved to a summit interpretive site at 14,130 feet, making it the highest paved road in North America. The full drive takes two to three hours round trip, requires no 4WD, and is typically open from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day.

Question 4

Which Rocky Mountain National Park trails are wheelchair accessible?

Accepted Answer

Four trails are formally designated as wheelchair accessible: Lily Lake, Sprague Lake, and Bear Lake on the east side, and Coyote Valley Trail on the west side. Lily Lake and Sprague Lake are the easiest, since both are 0.8-mile packed-gravel loops with under 35 feet of elevation gain and accessible fishing piers. Bear Lake is the least accessible of the four, with grades exceeding 8% and log steps on its southwest side.

Question 5

Do I need a timed entry reservation for Lily Lake?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Lily Lake sits within Rocky Mountain National Park's timed entry zone, so a standard Timed Entry reservation is required from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., May 22 through October 12, 2026. Sprague Lake and Bear Lake require the separate Timed Entry + Bear Lake Road permit, which covers 5 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Question 6

Where can you see moose in Rocky Mountain National Park?

Accepted Answer

Sprague Lake at dusk and the Coyote Valley Trail in the Kawuneeche Valley are the most reliable accessible spots for moose. Both are flat, hard-packed trails. Lily Lake is a better bet for waterfowl, muskrats, and songbirds than for moose.

Question 7

Is the Telluride Gondola wheelchair accessible?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Wheelchair-accessible cabins are available at every station, and attendants will slow or stop a cabin to assist with boarding wheelchairs and strollers. The gondola is completely free, with no ticket or reservation required, and it runs daily from 6:30 a.m. to midnight, May 21 through October 25, 2026.

Question 8

Is the Rocky Mountain Arsenal Wildlife Drive free?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The 11-mile Wildlife Drive is free, takes about 45 minutes to an hour, and comes with a free audio tour keyed to mile markers. Admission to the refuge itself is also free, and all parking lots and restrooms at the refuge are accessible.

Question 9

Where can you see bison near Denver?

Accepted Answer

Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge, roughly ten miles northeast of downtown Denver, has a bison herd visible from the Wildlife Drive. Visitors must stay in their vehicle through the one-way bison section and keep at least 75 feet away, which makes it one of the most reliable barrier-free wildlife experiences on the Front Range.

Question 10

Are dogs allowed at Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge?

Accepted Answer

Only service animals are permitted on the refuge's interior trails and in the Visitor Center. Pets are restricted to the Perimeter Trail.

Question 11

Is Crested Butte's Lower Loop trail wheelchair accessible?

Accepted Answer

The main "wide path" section of the Lower Loop was built specifically for wheelchairs, hand cycles, and strollers, and it runs flat past Peanut Lake with views of Gothic Mountain. A restricted parking lot about 1.2 miles up Peanut Lake Road is reserved for visitors with disabilities and can be reserved in advance.

Question 12

When is peak wildflower season in Crested Butte?

Accepted Answer
